![]() Because of its long association with the International Science Olympiads, DCU was asked by the Department of Educational and Science to organised and manage Ireland's participation in the IJSO. It was agreed that Mr. Michael A. Cotter would be the Irish IJSO delegation leader and Dr. Paraic James the pedagogical leader. The former was responsible for all aspects of the management of Ireland's participation in the IJSO and the later for the selection and training of the team. Given the short time scale it was impossible to hold a national competition to select the 2004 Irish IJSO team members. The five students were selected from the schools that had provided team members for the EUSO and Irish International Science Olympiads teams in the past. The principals of the schools were asked to choose students who had a keen interest and a record of achievement in science and who also had the maturity to be away from home for two weeks, travel to Indonesia and take part in an international science competition. Written consent of the parents/guardians was required. Dr. James made the final selection in consultation with his colleagues in the schools of Biology and Physics. Irish 2004 IJSO Team
