As part of Delegated Authority and the self study process, the Institute of Technology, Tralee has established a number of strategic research areas with the aim of focusing on their development and enhancing the institute's ability to attract research funding. One of these areas is Natural Resources and Environmental Management which encompasses current research activity in the School of Science and Engineering. As with each strategic research area (SRA), a leader is appointed to work closely and assist staff involved in research in this SRA. The SRA leader is involved in other key research activities which include development of a three year research plan and seeking research project funding through national and international schemes including industrial support. Collaborative links with other higher education institutes and industrial partners are essential to successful project funding and with this in mind a number of important projects are currently underway in the area of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. These projects can be divided conveniently into bioprocessing of natural products in developing bio-ingredients and environmental monitoring.
