The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland is the professional body representing chemists in Ireland. An organisation with wide ranging objectives, the Institute seeks to promote the advancement and knowledge of chemistry in all its branches. Appropriate grades of membership are available for everyone interested in chemistry. The grades include Fellows, Members, Licentiates, Graduates, Technicians, Companies, and Associates. Membership of the Institute also offers a pathway to the title European Chemist (EurChem) for highly qualified chemists. Application forms and other details are available on our website. ![]() The InstituteFOSS Ireland Golden Jubilee Award comprising a Medal and a 750 prize, was awarded to Dr Theo Ryan for the best article, entitled 'Antisense Makes Perfect Sense', submitted by a young chemist under 30 years of age. The Institute holds an Annual Chemical Congress and this year's meeting was held on 9th September in the Limerick Institute of Technology, with the theme 'Chemical Innovation: Developing Chemical Entrepreneurs'. The Institute co-sponsored the EURACHEM Ireland 3rd Level Analytical Measurement Competition (EAMC) in Athlone IT this year and presented the winning team with travel bursaries and one year's free Institute membership. Each year the Institute awards a medal to the student gaining the highest marks in Chemistry in the Leaving Certificate examinations. In 2004, Ciara Murphy, Colaiste Iognid, Galway, gained first place. The Institute recently launched a new careers leaflet 'Careers in the Chemical Sciences' (available from the Honorary Secretary). It is hoped that the leaflet will encourage school leavers to take chemistry as a subject for their degree. In the coming months, the Institute will organise an All Ireland Chemistry Essay Competition for young people.
