As its contribution to the welcoming back to Dublin of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS) in September 2005, after a gap of 48 years, the RDS has published Science and Ireland Value for Society . In addition to giving an introduction to Dublin's Fair City, the volume contains a lengthy summary of Irish contributions to the historical development of the physical sciences, together with reviews of Irish endeavour in recent years in a variety of areas reviews which also look to the future. The latter topics, written by distinguished authors, are: Developing a Research Culture; the Environment; Agriculture & the Rural Environment; Forestry; Marine Science; Biomedical Research; Genetics & Biotechnology; Chemical & Pharmaceutical Sciences; Information & Communications Technology; and Irish Contributions to International Science.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from the family of the late Dr Arthur Hughes, father-in-law of Professor Adrian Phillips, who died in November 2003 while the book was in its planning stage (both were very active members of the RDS Science Committee), the 324 page sewn hardback is available at the modest price of 30 (post free in Ireland). The volume is dedicated to Dr Hughes and to Professor Phillips. It can be ordered from Dr Ciaran Byrne, RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4; telephone 01-240 7217; E-mail: [email protected]
