The Centre for Nursing Research

The Centre for Nursing Research was set up in 1992 and, in its short history, it has already acquired a reputation to rank among the best in the United Kingdom. It has steadily been earning recognition as a regional centre with an international reputation.

We work in collaboration with researchers from other universities and organisations in the USA, Europe and other countries. The Centre for Nursing Research aims to:

  • Conduct high quality basic, strategic and applied research through a range of creative and appropriate methodologies;

  • Provide consultancy services in partnership with statutory, private and voluntary organisations;

  • Educate and train high calibre research students;

  • Provide a high profile forum for seminars, workshops, lectures and conferences;

  • Engage actively in knowledge transfer at local, national and international levels.

We have expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and in a number of disciplines including epidemiology, psychology, health promotion and education. Most of our research is multi-disciplinary. We specialise in a number of areas including Primary Care and Public Health, Learning Disability, Older People, Long term Care and Practice Development.

The Centre for Nursing Research also trains high calibre researchers. Currently we offer the traditional MPhil and PhD programmes, as well as the Doctor in Nursing Sciences (DNSc). They are all offered in part-time and full-time modes. There is an excellent infrastructure of supervision and support for students both off and on campus. Our staff are well known researchers and teachers who have considerable experience in supervising at doctoral level.
