Silver European Union Science Medals for Irish students

Irish EUSO delegation

Two Irish student teams (six students) won silver medals at the 2nd European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO2004) held in Groningen University, the Netherlands, from the 2nd 8th May 2004. The third team members were awarded bronze medals.

The European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO) is a team competition for EU second level school science students who are 16 years of age or younger on the December 31st prior to the competition. Each team of three must include a biology, a chemistry and a physics student. The three Irish teams were selected at the Irish Science Olympiad held in Dublin City University.

The Head Science Teacher in each second level school was asked to nominate the most keen and enthusiastic biology, chemistry and physics student in the school who was under 16 years of age. The selected students were invited to take part in an examination at the Irish Science Olympiad in DCU on Saturday 6th December 2003. Certificates were given to all participants. Medals were awarded to the top three students in biology, chemistry and physics. These students formed the nine-member group that represented Ireland at the 2nd European Union Science Olympiad in the Netherlands in May 2004. Because of the time of the year and the demands on team members for training, students taking the Junior or Leaving Certificate examinations in 2004 were excluded. The students also agreed to participate fully in all aspects of the EUSO training programme.

The teams were trained in DCU prior to their departure by Dr Sharon Davin (Biology), Dr Odilla Finlayson (Chemistry) and Dr Paul van Kampen (Physics). Mr Michael A. Cotter (DCU) is the EUSO president.

Ireland hosted the 1st EUSO in Dublin City University in April 2003. It is expected that EUSO2005 will take place in the Czech Republic, followed by Belgium (2006), Germany (2007) and Spain (2008).

Fifteen EU countries participated in the 2nd EUSO. The host country invited the seven countries that participated in the 1st EUSO in Dublin in 2003. They were represented by a total of 19 teams (57 Students): Belgium (2 teams), Germany (3 teams), Ireland (3 teams), Netherlands (3 teams), Spain (3 teams), Sweden (3 teams) and the United Kingdom (2 teams). Each country also sent mentors for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Scientific observers represented eight countries that joined the EU in 2004. These countries: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Poland and Slovakia, in addition to the seven countries listed above, will be invited to send a full delegation to the EUSO2005.
