Objectives

The Institute offers membership to chemists and others interested in chemistry. Its professional members are recognised as highly qualified practitioners. It seeks to promote the advancement and knowledge of chemistry in all its branches. It is an organisation with wide-ranging objectives, making its expertise available to Government, to other organisations and to the general public. Twice yearly it publishes a magazine called Irish Chemical News. It also sponsors chemistry lectures for third level Student Societies.

Awards and Honours

The Institute has established several awards for chemistry. Each year it awards a Medal to the student gaining the highest marks in Chemistry in the Leaving Certificate examinations. It also awards the Boyle Higgins Medal to distinguished Irish chemists or chemists from abroad working in Ireland, and it awards Honorary Fellowship to highly distinguished chemists of any nationality.

In 2003, two students gained first place in the Leaving Certificate chemistry examinations namely Sharon Margaret Maguire, St Oliver Post Primary School, Oldcastle, Co Meath, and Alan Marron, Colaiste Mhichairthinn, Monaghan. The Medals were presented by the President of the Institute at the Institute AGM held in Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, in April this year. Sharon was accompanied by her parents and her grandmother. Sharon is now studying Pharmacology in Trinity College Dublin. Alan is now studying in Cambridge University, UK, for a degree in Natural Sciences and was represented by his mother and chemistry teacher.

Future Developments

The Institute is currently drawing up a strategic plan to make its activities more relevant to people interested in Chemistry in an Irish context.
