The strength of clinical research at SVUH is based on a long-established tradition of collaboration between patients, physicians and UCD academics. In 1990, the first dedicated facility for education and research on a hospital campus in Ireland was developed at SVUH providing a critical focus for clinical academic activity and training. In 2000, the Conway Institute of Bio-molecular Biomedical Research was built on the UCD campus providing critical core facilities for the bench to bedside research being prioritised by university and hospital. The General Clinical Research Unit, offering state-of-the-art facilities for clinical research at SVUH was completed in 2006 and awaits opening. The combined facilities provided in the ERC, GCRU and the Conway Institute bridging university and hospital initiatives, provide a unique resource for clinical-scientific translational research in Ireland, thus ensuring the highest quality healthcare now and in the future.
Research programmes at SVUH
SVUH is Ireland's premier centre for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, liver and pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psychiatric illness. Major research programmes have been generated by SVUH based, internationally recognised leaders in each of these fields. Research teams include clinicians, surgeons, scientists and graduate students from each of these backgrounds. Significant funding has been obtained from SFI, HRB, EU and pharmaceutical companies but the greatest resources of each programme are the clinical research bases and strong partnerships with patients, their families and the community.
