The National Access Programme at
Tyndall is an SFI-funded scheme
which provides Irish researchers with
funded access to Tyndall's facilities and
expertise. It represents an ambitious
initiative to build an "institute without
walls" - a national, collaborative effort to
strengthen Ireland's overall ICT research
standing and to enhance the country's
growing international reputation as a
leading ICT research location. The
programme assists SFI to derive greater
value from its considerable investments
in research infrastructure by avoiding
unnecessary duplication in research
facilities and by maximizing the
utilization of the existing installed equipment
base. With over 80 projects funded involving 11
Irish institutions and 9 different technological
areas, during the first two years of the
scheme, the NAP is seen as having a catalytic
effect on technology-driven innovation and
collaboration in the Irish third-level sector.
An external committee, drawn from senior
academics in the participating tird-level
institutes, and crfeired by Professor Brian
McCraith (Dublin City UUniversity), is
responsible for managing the programme and
approving individual project proposals on the
basis of scientific merit.
The programme makes available all of the
equipment infrastructure and research expertise
of the Tyndall National Institute to researchers
(Principal Investigators, Postdocs, Postgraduate
students, etc) based in all of Ireland's
Universities and Institutes of Technology.
Successful applicants have access to state-
of-the-art laboratory facilities along with
comprehensive supporting expertise. The
programme funds all access costs including
travel and daily subsistence for visiting
researchers. The programme operates a
continuous open call and proposals are being
sought from the following technology areas:
 Device design
 Simulation & modelling
 Materials characterisation
 Microelectronics
 Photonics
 Silicon Fabrication
 Compound semiconductor
fabrication
 MEMS & microsystems
 Nanotechnology
 ICT for life science applications
