The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland

The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland is the professional body representing chemists in Ireland. An organisation with wide ranging objectives, the Institute seeks to promote the advancement and knowledge of chemistry in all its branches.

Our 2006 Annual Award for Chemistry was made to ProfessorAPrasanna de Silva, Queen's University Belfast, who gave a series of lectures in Waterford, Limerick and Dublin in April entitled 'Messages from Molecules: Sensing and Computing' (see photo).

The Institute co-sponsored the Eurachem 3rd Level Analytical Measurement Competition (EAMC) in Letterkenny IT this year and presented the winning teams with prizes and one year's free Institute membership.

The Institute's 2006 Annual Chemical Congress was held in Dublin City University on Tuesday 5 September with the theme 'Green Chemistry: The Chemist's Role in Sustainable Development'.

Each year the Institute awards a medal to the student gaining the highest marks in Chemistry in the Leaving Certificate examinations.

The Institute's careers leaflet 'Careers in the Chemical Sciences' is available from the Honorary Secretary. It is hoped that the leaflet will encourage school leavers to take up chemistry as a subject for their degree.

The Institute sponsors an annual Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium, and offers Post- graduate Travel Bursaries to 3rd level research students to attend inter- national Conferences. The Institute also sponsors student Chemistry Society lectures and a secondary schools chemistry essay competition, and many other events such as the ChemEd Ireland Conference.

Appropriate grades of membership are available for everyone interested in chemistry and provide good value for the annual fee charged.

Application forms and other details are available on our website. Membership of the Institute offers a pathway to the title European Chemist (EurChem) for highly qualified chemists.

In the coming months, the Institute will coordinate the results of a questionnaire seeking to provide further improved services and benefits to our members.
