![]() This new initiative provides students with a broadly based programme in years 1 and 2, from which they proceed in years 3 and 4 to specialist studies in areas of their choice - which may include topics in mainstream mathematics or in statistics or computer science. There is a six-month placement in year 3. Final year options include coding, cryptology & algebra, financial mathematics, industrial / commercial statistics, optimisation, applied functional analysis, dynamical systems & chaos, graphics & image analysis, numerical analysis & fluid mechanics, decision theory & games. Graduates of this programme will be qualified for a wide variety of careers in industry, commerce, including the financial sector, the teaching and other professions, and the public sector. Research activities Groups within the School are engaged in internationally recognised research in a number of areas - geometric complex analysis, algebra, fluid & solid mechanics, functional analysis & spectral theory, high energy physics, classical particle dynamics, and statistics. For instance, the functional analysis & spectral theory group is involved in various aspects of mathematical physics, such as spectral analysis of Schrdinger operators and development of the theory of non-selfadjoint operators. There are collaborative links with Northern Illinois University, St Petersburg State University, and Dublin City University, as well as informal research contacts with a number of institutions in the UK, Poland and France. A member of the group was recently awarded an Irish Government Postdoctoral Fellowship under the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology Embark Initiative.
