New cost effective corrosion protection for metal finishing industries

Design of pilot plant for evaluation of new chemicals

Traditional corrosion protection methods such as galvanising and chemical conversion coating with iron and zinc phosphate are fast becoming obsolete because of end of life legislation and environmental restrictions with regard to chrome and other toxic heavy metals.

GMIT has collaborated with world leaders Henkel and Chemetall to investigate state-of-the-art processes - autophoretic and silane chemistry. The group has carried out research with Thermo King, which has resulted in dramatically improved corrosion protection, in addition to substantial savings in water usage, reduced chemical consumption, and enhanced environmental performance. Solvent usage has also been virtually eliminated.
