![]() Objectives The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland seeks to promote the advancement and knowledge of chemistry in all its branches. It is an organisation with wide ranging objectives, making its expertise available to Government, to other organisations and to the general public. It sets appropriate standards for professional membership, and can trace its origins back to the foundation of the State in 1922. Twice yearly it publishes Irish Chemical News, the Institute magazine. Membership The Institute offers membership to chemists of all types and to others interested in the profession of chemistry in Ireland. Its professional members are recognised as highly qualified practitioners. Membership grades include Fellows and Honorary Fellows (FICI and HonFICI), Members (MICI), Licentiates (LICI), Graduate Members (GradICI), Technician Members (TechICI), Associate Members and Company Members. Highly qualified members of the Institute may also apply for the title European Chemist (EurChem). Honours and Awards The Institute has established several types of awards for chemistry. Each year it awards a medal to the student gaining the highest marks in Chemistry in the Leaving Certificate examinations. In 2002, Kyle Parfrey, Blackrock College, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, gained the highest marks and was honoured during the Institute's AGM in the Stillorgan Park Hotel on 10 April this year. The Institute sponsors lectures in chemistry organised by third level Student Societies. Honorary Fellowship is awarded to highly distinguished chemists provided that not more than ten chemists hold the award at any time. Currently there are seven Honorary Fellows of the Institute. The Institute also presents the Boyle Higgins Medal and Lecture Award to internationally distinguished Irish chemists or chemists from abroad working in Ireland. To date seven chemists have received the award.
