RELAY - centre for food research information in Ireland

Promoting Irish food research
Food research findings from 19 research institutions/ universities are freely available to Irish food companies via RELAY, the national food research dissemination project. RELAY translates the research results into user friendly language and communicates it in a targeted fashion to Irish food companies, state agencies and organisations. RELAY uses a number of different methods to communicate the research findings to industry - including the circulation of updates on each project, hosting workshops, visiting companies and the RELAY website, www.relayresearch.ie . Almost 250 researchers and their teams contribute to this vast reservoir of knowledge. The challenge for Irish food companies is to exploit this 'think-tank' to support research and development in their own company.

The Department of Agriculture and Food (DAF) has committed 70m to a food research initiative called the Food Institutional Research Measure (FIRM) over the period 2000 to 2006. FIRM was established by DAF to support research, development and innovation in the Irish food industry whilst underpinning food safety and consumer confidence, and therefore favours projects with commercial potential. FIRM funds projects in areas such as food safety and quality, innovative new product development, improving meat quality, exploitation of dairy ingredients, assessing market trends, extending shelf-life, and improving the health benefits of foods. RELAY is the national dissemination project associated with FIRM, and its primary role is to assist Irish companies exploit the outputs of the FIRM research.

Knowledge at your fingertips - www.relayresearch.ie
The RELAY website, launched in February 2002, has become a focal point for Irish food research. Over 800 researchers and executives in companies, state organisations and government departments have registered on the website. The popularity of the website is partially due to the fact that members can tailor the site to meet their own needs. Having highlighted projects of interest to their company, members will receive an automatic email alert as soon as new project information is uploaded. RELAY also sends email alerts to companies informing them of relevant events and workshops. The website contains up-to-date results on all FIRM projects, and references to thousands of related publications. Companies can pinpoint research topics, researchers or institutions expert in a particular field by using the search facility.

As RELAY is a national dissemination project all of this information is available free of charge to members. To become a member simply submit your details to the RELAY team on www.relayresearch.ie

More from RELAY in the future
RELAY is planning to add-value to their service, making it a 'one-stop-shop' for food research information. It is intended to include information and contact details on all publicly funded food research projects conducted in Ireland - including those supported by the EU and other government agencies/ bodies. RELAY will also be offering companies access to vast amounts of information available from commercial databases - e.g. Food Science and Technology database (FSTA). RELAY will search the databases for topics of interest to companies and supply a list of document references on the required subject.
