Materials Ireland - turning research into reality

Who we are
Materials Ireland is the national coordinating programme for research and development in materials technologies and materials processing technologies. It gives Irish industry direct access to expertise in the third level sector through technology transfer and specific sectoral networks.

What we do
The goal of AMT and Materials Ireland is to ensure that the latest materials and manufacturing technologies are available to improve the competitiveness of Irish companies, to address their future needs and challenges so that they can compete in world markets.

There are three strands to our strategy to achieve this goal:

  • Development and progression of a strategic national research agenda for materials and manufacturing and the funding of research programmes

  • Technology transfer and technology management to Irish industry

  • Sectoral technology development to benefit Irish industry.

Research
The Commercialisation Fund is designed to assist third level researchers in accomplishing substantive applied research projects based on a foundation of confidence that the underlying technologies are sound and that there is a reasonable prospect of serving a worthwhile, identifiable market.

The research must not only be of high quality but have the potential to impact in terms of:

  • Commercial interest to existing industries in Ireland and are transferable by means of license or other practical arrangement, or

  • Address specific current or emerging opportunities or threats facing individual sectors of industry in Ireland, or

  • Have the potential to provide the basis of new business areas.

In each of the last three years, an average of 4 million of funding per year in materials and manufacturing has been approved.

Partners
We currently fund research 57 projects and have research partners in the following institutions: UCD, TCD, UL, UCC, IT Sligo, IT Tallaght, NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, Galway-Mayo IT, DCU, Teagasc, Cork IT, Dublin IT.

Summary
Our focus is on commercialising research. Full details on all our projects and activities are available on our new website - http://www.amt-mi.ie
