The Intelligent Systems Engineering Laboratory (ISEL) is a Recognised Research Group (RRG) within the Faculty of Informatics, on the Magee campus of the University of Ulster. The group was founded in 1997 and is currently composed of 12 academic, 6 research officers and 18 research students. ISEL's mission statement is to contribute to the University of Ulster's objectives of producing high quality research of national and international excellence, and in particular to contribute to the development of intelligent computational systems. The activities of the group encompass research into a range of intelligent and hybrid technologies:
The research is also being applied to topics as diverse as intelligent embedded systems, hybrid intelligent machine vision systems, re-configurable computing, hardware-software partitioning, design automation, and self-repair of complex embedded systems. The group has a strong history of gaining funding from local industry and the European Union. Current EU funded projects are: ![]() Sense Maker: A Multi-sensory, Task-specific Adaptable Perception System. The project aims to combine biological, physical and engineering technological approaches in the production of adaptable perception systems. QUDOS: Quantum Device Technology on Silicon. This project aims to research the design and fabrication of quantum device based neural network circuits on a silicon substrate. Quantum devices are of interest to ISEL as potential building blocks for high speed arrays suited to implementation platforms for intelligent applications such as neural networks and other intelligent techniques. The group has also an interest in developing systems to facilitate remote access to engineering educational opportunities. Current work in this area includes the development of a remote access electronic laboratory remotely accessible over the WWW. The group has recently secured major EPSRC funding to support this work.
