Centre for Human Proteomics

Prof Dolores Cahill, Director, National Centre for Human Proteomics, RCSI

Researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) secured funding of 13.5m from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to establish a world-class science facility to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of serious medical conditions including heart disease.

The Centre for Human Proteomics combines leading edge technology with world-class scientists to focus on the identification and characterisation of proteins involved in cardiovascular and other diseases to aid in the development of new pharmaceuticals and therapies. In addition, the Centre provides support to other scientific centres of excellence, as well as increasing the knowledge base for proteomics in Ireland.

The Director of the centre is Prof Dolores Cahill, who returned from Germany last year, where she worked in the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics, Berlin. The Centre is based at the RCSI's main campus in Dublin's city centre. Work at the Centre for Human Proteomics is conducted in partnership with a number of companies - including Servier, Protagen, Allegro Technologies, and SurGen.

According to Prof Cahill: 'The future for biomedical research programmes lies in linking technologies with medical sciences. The Centre for Human Proteomics provides an opportunity to bring together technologies and medical sciences, and matching them with skilled global scientists to advance the growing knowledge-based industry which is the future for the Irish economy'.

Other key research developments at RCSI include the Programme for Human Genomics and the Biopharmaceutical Sciences Network funded under the Higher Education Authority's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions, which provided the infrastructure for this development. A Clinical Research Centre, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a Biomedical Research Centre, contribute to world-class research facilities at RCSI.
